My parents have always been stuck on cherry wood and the general color scheme in their home is pretty neutral. I've been trying to convince them for years to update their furniture to give their home more personality. I believe most of the furniture they do have is over 13 years old and doesn't provide them with adequate storage. However, a few years ago we added some Trofast storage pieces to hold my children's toys at their house. But then the toys (my children) started to take over their living room so they finally have given in to an IKEA makeover.
Now we all know my favorite IKEA line is the Besta Storage Series, so I started to design my parents a custom piece using IKEA's FREE online Besta design program. My parents were in need of storage for their ever growing movie and music collection, as well as a strategic way to hide their grandchildren's toys. This is something I was able to achieve with the Besta line.
Here is the final product, my parents selected white Besta frames with the Selsviken High Gloss Light Gray Green finish with Glass Doors. The color is sophisticated yet welcoming and compliments the other decor in their home.
My mother expressed the importance of having a place to display her Precious Moments Collection, so I included a wall shelf unit with glass doors and shelves. Prior to the instillation of their Besta piece my Mother didn't have a place to display these prized trinkets.
We designed the Besta unit with several drawers to accommodate their extensive movie and music collection. We were also able to create a space to store all their electronics, these pieces are still usable but are safely kept behind a glass door.
One of my father's favorite features is the glass top panel, it's so easy to clean and protects the finish. He also appreciates the extra hidden storage space for all of his grandchildren's toys and other miscellaneous items that mother is unwilling to part with. Overall a project we are all proud of.
As many of you know, I have two daughters ages 5 & 7. They've always shared a room out of a necessity but last October we moved into a larger place. It's funny because initially I thought they would jump at the chance of decorating their very own rooms!! Boy, was I mistaken!! They both insisted that they wanted to share a room. Don't get me wrong, I love that they have such a close bond!! It just proved challenging for me as both of the girls bedrooms are modest in size and the girls have very opposite personalities. So we decided to use one of the bedrooms as their actuall bedroom and then we use the other room as a playroom. The playroom is still a work in progress so I'll be sharing it in a future post.
Another major challenge for me was merging their personalities into one cohesive space. My older daughter loves dinosaurs and Minecraft, while my younger daughter loves princesses and is a true girly girl. I tried to tie both of their likes into a whimsical theme, a magical land full of rainbows, butterflies, unicorns, mermaids and dinosaurs. It was also important for me to include pieces that had positive sayings to remind them how amazing they are and to encourage them daily!!
The key piece of furniture in their room is the SLAKT Bed frame with pull-out bed and storage. It is such a key piece to keeping their room functional, they are able to utilize the pull-out bed at night for sleeping and then during the day they can put it away so they have more space to move around. And if they ever do decide that they no longer want to be roommates the beds can be used independently.
So when the girls get up in the morning they are able to easily push the pull-out bed back under the main bed frame. It's very simple to do and takes only a few seconds.
Here are some of the other great features on the SLKAT bed frame, there are two large storage drawers under the pull-out. We use these drawers for my older daughter's bedding (she sleeps on the bottom) when the pull-out is not extended, it holds her pillows so we don't have to worry about where they will go when her bed is not in use. There is also a great locking feature to keep the pull-out bed from getting pushed under the taller frame when it's in use. And in the same respect keeps the beds from being pulled apart.
When the pull-out bed is tucked away they have so much more room to get ready in the morning and to move about their bedroom. Next to the beds I chose to use the Kallax shelf unit in white. It has a dual purpose, it is a bookcase but also a nightstand when both beds are being utilized at night. I really like how deep the shelves are in the Kallax unit, it's able to hold all my daughters large chunky books. Above the Kallax unit we added the Mossland picture ledge to hold and display the girls nicknacks.
At the foot of the bed there is not a lot of space so we tried not to clutter it with too many things. The girls use the tall Kallax shelf unit in white to store large accessories like hats and sweaters. Inside each shelf we used the cardboard TJENA storage boxes with lid to keep things organized and dust free. To be honest we've used the same STUVA storage combination for the last 4 and half years as their primary clothing storage. Each combination belongs to one of the girls and holds their everyday clothing and accessories from headbands, hair bows, pajamas, t-shirts, shorts to undergarments.
The STUVA line provides various drawer sizes and types, as well as adjustable shelving with custom fit baskets and bins.
I tried to include as many decorative pieces to reflect the girls styles and personalities. Above their bed I hung the MYRHEDEN frame to organize some of their smaller accessories, like sunglasses and necklaces. I also clipped inspirational cards to the frame that say things like "Stay Golden" and "Your Future Looks Bright". I think it's so important for my girls to feel comfortable and confident in who they are, I tried my best to emphasize this in their bedroom. Overall I'm thrilled with the way it turned out and so grateful to have been able to solve the many challenges of a small space with IKEA!!

About a decade ago, when my husband and I were in college, we moved out into our very first place. It was a tiny studio in central Oahu, and we had the hardest time finding furniture on island that would fit into our space at the right price point.
I remembered vising an IKEA® store on the mainland year’s prior where I had fallen in love with their great space saving storage options, affordable prices and great design. However, at the time IKEA did not ship to Hawaii. So I joked with my husband that we should fly to an IKEA® store and bring a bunch of stuff back home. He thought I was crazy, so we made do with what we could find on island at the time.
Over the years I felt like not much had changed in my career or the selection of furniture on island. So in 2013, with two children in tow, my husband and I created haul2hi in a tiny storage unit. Our mission was to provide the people of Hawaii access to functional and affordable IKEA® home furnishings at an unbeatable price.
We have since then outgrown our tiny storage unit and are now located at 1148 Bethel Street in the heart of Downtown Honolulu and we are able to ship just about anything IKEA carries. We also offer free commercial and residential design services where we help with room layout and product selection.
Every week, orders arrive for our customers, who face similar challenges as we did. They have small bedrooms and living rooms with very little to no storage, or they are looking to modernize and maximize their tiny kitchens. We are excited to see that IKEA® has been able to address those issues with numerous innovative furniture items, such as beds with built-in drawers and headboards with storage, sofa sleepers with lift up storage compartments, and customizable entertainment systems with floor to ceiling storage. Not to mention that IKEA kitchens are known for their endless interior storage options and custom design at a fraction of the cost.
To see it come full circle has been exciting and rewarding. I’ve been able to help better the lives of not only my family but also those in my community by providing access to affordable, functional and well-designed furniture.
Here are some photos of our journey through the years:
A few years ago a friend of mine asked for some IKEA help!! She had 3 kids and they were taking over her living room!! I know we've all been there, so over whelmed by our children's toys (aka...their MESS) and not sure where to start!! It was a fun project and she was really happy with the final result. I recently visited her home and all the IKEA products she purchased are still in great shape and are still being used by her now family of 6!!
This is the before photo she sent me!! Her major concern was organizing her children's toys, replacing her current furniture and creating a space that reflected her style and personality. She had purchased a bin storage system but found that it wasn't holding enough of her children's things, and that a lot of their toys were too big for the bins. Another huge issue she had was that her sofas, which she had just purchased 6 months prior, were sagging and stained. With 3 little ones it's a necessity to have furniture that is washable or at the very least wipe able. And lastly, she had picked a lot of neutral colors to be safe and felt her home lacked personality. After going back and forth for a few weeks with IKEA links and pins from Pinterest this is what she selected....
We started with selecting her sofa, at the time we had an IKEA Soderhamn Sofa on display in our shop and she loved it!! The selling factors for her were that it was a deep seat sofa, you could wash the covers and reconfigure it at any time. For the floors, who knew under that big shaggy rug hid these beautiful wood floors. She debated on adding a rug but felt that for cleaning purposes, it was much simpler to leave her wood floors bare. Storage was her family's main challenge, she selected the Besta, Stuva and Tofteryd lines to help her get organized. These lines also helped her achieve a more sophisticated feel in her living room. We decided to keep all the main furniture pieces in white to help create a more clean and open living space, saving all the pops of color for her accent pieces. And to finish off the space we added some curtains and pillows she purchased from Target.
She selected the Soderhamn Sofa in the color Samsta dark gray, mainly because it was a darker and more forgiving color. It was really important for her family to have a place where they could snuggle up and read stories or watch movies, something the deep seats of the Soderhamn definitely helped achieve. Also as I mentioned earlier, the major selling factors for her were that she could wash the covers, change or replace the covers completely and that the sofa was easy to reconfigure at any time. This Sofa is a combination of three separate pieces, two sofa sections and one corner section.
For media storage she selected the Besta Burs TV unit in high gloss white, it has two large drawers with internal organizers for media and electronic storage. We were even able to organize some of the kids’ books in here. Another great feature of this piece is that the DVD player, cable box and gaming console are hidden behind the 3-center flip down doors. No need to worry about the little ones pushing buttons or trying to open the DVD player and stick their toys in, I know that's something my children have definitely tried
To match the TV unit she selected the Tofteryd Coffee table in high gloss white. The great thing about this piece is it has two very deep shelves and two smooth-running drawers for storing remote controls, magazines and other knickknacks. The gloss on this piece makes it very easy to wipe clean.
And to finish off the space she selected two Stuva storage benches with pullout storage drawers for the kids’ toys. The great thing about this piece is that it can also be used as a bench for more seating or as a desk!! My main goal with helping her family get organized was creating a "home" for all their things. We used bins to sort the smaller toys and fit them all neatly into the big storage drawers. Overall all the IKEA pieces worked really well for her family and she didn't have to compromise on style or functionality
