2 Growing Girls + 1 Tiny Room = IKEA to the Rescue

As many of you know, I have two daughters ages 5 & 7.  They've always shared a room out of a necessity but last October we moved into a larger place.  It's funny because initially I thought they would jump at the chance of decorating their very own rooms!! Boy, was I mistaken!! They both insisted that they wanted to share a room.  Don't get me wrong, I love that they have such a close bond!! It just proved challenging for me as both of the girls bedrooms are modest in size and the girls have very opposite personalities.  So we decided to use one of the bedrooms as their actual bedroom and then we use the other room as a playroom.  The playroom is still a work in progress so I'll be sharing it in a future post.
Picture
Another major challenge for me was merging their personalities into one cohesive space.  My older daughter loves dinosaurs and Minecraft, while my younger daughter loves princesses and is a true girly girl.  I tried to tie both of their likes into a whimsical theme, a magical land full of rainbows, butterflies, unicorns, mermaids and dinosaurs.  It was also important for me to include pieces that had positive sayings to remind them how amazing they are and to encourage them daily!!
Picture
The key piece of furniture in their room is the SLAKT Bed frame with pull-out bed and storage.  It is such a key piece to keeping their room functional, they are able to utilize the pull-out bed at night for sleeping and then during the day they can put it away so they have more space to move around. And if they ever do decide that they no longer want to be roommates the beds can be used independently.
Picture
So when the girls get up in the morning they are able to easily push the pull-out bed back under the main bed frame.  It's very simple to do and takes only a few seconds.
Here are some of the other great features on the SLKAT bed frame, there are two large storage drawers under the pull-out. We use these drawers for my older daughter's bedding (she sleeps on the bottom) when the pull-out is not extended, it holds her pillows so we don't have to worry about where they will go when her bed is not in use. There is also a great locking feature to keep the pull-out bed from getting pushed under the taller frame when it's in use.  And in the same respect keeps the beds from being pulled apart.
Picture
When the pull-out bed is tucked away they have so much more room to get ready in the morning and to move about their bedroom.  Next to the beds I chose to use the Kallax shelf unit in white.  It has a dual purpose, it is a bookcase but also a nightstand when both beds are being utilized at night.  I really like how deep the shelves are in the Kallax unit, it's able to hold all my daughters large chunky books.  Above the Kallax unit we added the Mossland picture ledge to hold and display the girls nicknacks.
Picture
At the foot of the bed there is not a lot of space so we tried not to clutter it with too many things.  The girls use the tall Kallax shelf unit in white to store large accessories like hats and sweaters.  Inside each shelf we used the cardboard TJENA storage boxes with lid to keep things organized and dust free.  To be honest we've used the same STUVA storage combination for the last 4 and half years as their primary clothing storage.  Each combination belongs to one of the girls and holds their everyday clothing and accessories from headbands, hair bows, pajamas, t-shirts, shorts to undergarments.
The STUVA line provides various drawer sizes and types, as well as adjustable shelving with custom fit baskets and bins.
Picture
I tried to include as many decorative pieces to reflect the girls styles and personalities.  Above their bed I hung the MYRHEDEN frame to organize some of their smaller accessories, like sunglasses and necklaces.  I also clipped inspirational cards to the frame that say things like "Stay Golden" and "Your Future Looks Bright".  I think it's so important for my girls to feel comfortable and confident in who they are, I tried my best to emphasize this in their bedroom.  Overall I'm thrilled with the way it turned out and so grateful to have been able to solve the many challenges of a small space with IKEA!!

Hello!. I’d love to buy that bed for my daughter who is 6 years old, she’ll have a bed for her guests.
After one year using it, do your daughters like it?. I read some reviews saying that it’s weak and uncomfortable. I’d love to knife your opinion. Thanks!

Hello Virginia,

Our girls love this bed and still sleep in it till this day. Comfort level wise will definitely depend on the mattress you use and not the bed frame itself. It's a great bed for storage and an additional bed frame when needed. :)

Hi, planning on purchasing this bed today. Which mattress do you have for the pull-out? Their room looks great!

Hi, planning on purchasing this bed today. Can you tell me where you got your mattress for the pull-out? I noticed it has to be a certain height.
The girl's room looks great! Thank you.

Hello,

The only real mattress from IKEA to use with this bed frame if storing when not using is the following mattress:

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/minnesund-foam-mattress-firm-white-30315876/

We would recommend getting two mattresses though and stacking one of them on the other bed when not in use.

Hello, I have 3 boys, 2 of them the same ages as your girls. This bed I believe would be ideal. When not in use do you have to take off the mattress on the underbed and stack up on the top bed and store pillows and bed covers in the drawers? Trying to choose mattress to avoid that. Ideally want the boys to just slide it all underneath.
The girls room looks fab !!

Hello Laide,

Thank you for your interest in haul2hi! Yes, the this bed can use a mattress sold from IKEA where you can leave it on the lower bed and just push in when not in use.

Here's a link for the item:

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/slaekt-bed-frame-w-pull-out-bed-storage-white-s19239450/

At least for the bottom mattress, you would need one of these:

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/minnesund-foam-mattress-firm-white-30315876/

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/meistervik-foam-mattress-firm-white-50315875/

We would recommend the more expensive mattress though as it would be more comfortable. The top mattress can be any twin mattress you like though.

If you would like a quote for anything, please kindly use our quote form for an estimate.

Best,

Jane

Hello we are thinking of buying this bed for our daughter’s room. Is the under bed attached to the main bed or is it possible to pull it out and put it anywhere in the room? Thank you!

Hello Rachel,

Thank you for your comment for the bed frame. The beds are detachable. It is the SLAKT line. Please let use our quote form if we're able to quote you for anything.

Bset,

Jane

Hello Jane!

I JUST bought this bed for my 4 year old daughter. Unfortunately our non-IKEA twin mattress is overstuffed in the top bed (you can't even see the headboard). Can you tell me which IKEA mattress we should get that will fit comfortably in the upper portion of the SLAKT frame?

Thanks so much,
Melissa

Hello Melissa,

Here are some of the IKEA beds you can purchase:

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/minnesund-foam-mattress-firm-white-30315876/

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/meistervik-foam-mattress-firm-white-50315875/

However, sometimes Costco carries a foam one that works just as well.

Please do let us know if we can help with anything and we'll be glad to assist.

Best,

Jane

Hi! I'm thinking of buying this bed for my kids. Are you still using this now? Has it held up well over the years? Would love some honest feedback because we want to invest in a bed for the next 7-8 years.

Hello Hala,

Thank you for your interest in haul2hi!

Yes, they are still using it and it's in great shape. If using the pull-out bed quite a bit, the mattress chosen might not be the most comfortable but the quality of the bed itself is great for the price.

We hope this helps but please let us know if anything.

Best,

Jane

    Hello!!

I'm Jane and about a decade ago, my husband and I were in college and we moved out into our very first place.  It was a tiny studio and we had the hardest time finding furniture on island that would fit into our space at the right price point. So in 2013 with 2 children in tow we created haul2hi in a tiny storage unit with the mission of providing the people of Hawaii access to functional and affordable IKEA® home furnishings at an unbeatable price.
